A true jazz legend, Eddie Henderson was born in New York City. The son of a Cotton Club dancer, Eddie Henderson began playing the trumpet at the age of 10 and grew up surrounded by some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians, including Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis.
It was Miles Davis who convinced Eddie to become a professional jazz musician and after gigs with Miles and John Handy, Eddie joined the legendary Herbie Hancock Sextet (who also recorded as the Mwandishi Band) in 1968. This highly experimental and successful band delved deeply into fusion and free jazz for three years. Eddie continued in the fusion style during the seventies, making albums for Capricorn and Blue Note and joining Art Blakey's band for a while.
In the early nineties he moved back to New York where his career took off again with a series of exceptional albums for Steeple Chase and Milestone, while also working as a psychiatrist.
A highly respected veteran on the international jazz circuit Eddie still tours regularly as a member of the All-Star band ‘The Cookers’.
Backed by an all-star trio, who between them have performed and recorded with a panoply of jazz legends, this promises to be an evening of exceptional music.

Featuring leading trumpeter Neil Yates and British Jazz Award-winning guitarist Nigel Price, Chetrio celebrates the legacy of the great Chet Baker - the songs he sang so bitter-sweetly and his ever melodic interpretations of the jazz standard repertoire. Chet had a huge influence on Yates, both his sound on the horn and his ear-led approach to improvisation.
Yates' singing too reflects Baker's lyrical and plaintive style without being a pure imitation. Chetrio seeks to crystallise something of Chet's influence in a respectful homage.
In his later years Chet chose to work without drums, preferring the more intimate trio setting. Once, when he was recommended a drummer by a friend, he famously said, "He'd have to be a truly amazing drummer to be better than no drummer at all!"
The repertoire features songs that Chet made his own, tunes he brought to life again and again, and a few "what if" conjectures, wondering how Chet might have approached the music of today had he not met his infamous fateful end in Amsterdam.

This popular group makes a return visit to Greensand Jazz for the final gig of the summer season. Led by bassist Arnie Somogyi, the quintet pays tribute to two of his musical idols, Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk.
Arnie stood in at Ronnie Scott's Club with the Mingus Dynasty Big Band, a high accolade indeed and confirmation of his reputation as one of the UK's leading bassists.
Pianist Bruce Boardman has spent years absorbing the style of Thelonius Monk and his evocation of one of the most distinctive piano stylists in jazz is uncanny.
A slight change in personnel from their last visit, the music of Mingus and Monk comes to life through the infectious and unique compositions, played with verve and energy and creating the atmosphere required to show case authentically the music of two jazz giants.

Horace Silver was one of the all time jazz greats. He described his hard driving piano style and original composition approach as “meaningful simplicity.” Silver transitioned from bebop to hard bop by stressing melody rather than complex harmony, and combined clean and often humorous right-hand lines with darker notes and chords in a near-perpetual left-hand rumble. His compositions similarly emphasized catchy melodies. After featuring with Lou Donaldson and then with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Silver formed his own quintet, writing some of the most enduring tunes in jazz such as “The Preacher” “Blowin’ the Blues Away”, “Señor Blues” & “Song for my Father”, while performing them in his distinctively personal “hard bop” blues & gospel style.
Pianist Chris Ingham brings his hard driving REBOP ensemble to Greensand Jazz, evoking the style of Horace Silver’s music while adding its own imaginative and creative approach.
